|Hotel Capri: The 50’s are back, but actually has their aura ever left Havana?
At the end of that decade, gangsters and mafia bosses rushed to leave Cuba, their casinos were closed, but it is undeniably true that Havana today still maintains somehow the exterior allure of that period.
American tourism to Cuba was launched in 1952 and the demand for tourist facilities increased accordingly. Built in the second half of the 50’s, the Capri supplied hundreds of hotel beds. Although actually in those days, the presence of a casino was of greater importance than the hotel property, after all the big bucks were earned there.
55 Years later, the iconic Hotel Capri was reopened after an intensive renovation on the eve of 2014.
Although the 1950’s often featured an ageless modernity, a facelift however was necessary so was the replacement of elevators, central air conditioning etc. The makeover has been done a modish way, preserving the design, architecture and feel of the bygone.
Hotel Capri stands in a vibrant part of Havana and so does the Ford Thunderbird (same age as the Capri). Frequently we spot this vehicle when coincidentally parked across the hotel and once left behind by the running mobster Meyer Lansky.
Entering the spacious and bright lobby, immediately the revival of the 50’s is sensed, similarly in the guestrooms with solid furniture, nice fabrics and again that nod to the half of the last century.
The pool is not big, but cute, bordered with elegant lounge beds and patio chairs. It has conquered a privileged position on the highest (18th floor), embraced by Havana and providing ceaseless city panoramas.
The Capri is equipped with several restaurants (a la carte and buffet) and (snack) bars, Executive Floor with gym and sauna facilities (operational mid-2014).
So indeed, a new comeback to Cuba of the Fifties and of NH-Hoteles.
